Rams Drop Overtime Thriller

Boston, MA -- The Suffolk University Women’s Basketball team (3-5 GNAC, 10-9 overall) ended the second half on a 10-0 to send it to overtime, but it wasn’t enough as Emerson College (5-3 GNAC, 14-7) escaped with a 62-61 victory in overtime at Suffolk’s Regan Gymnasium Wednesday night.

Three Suffolk players reached double figures in scoring. Senior Meghan Tracey (Rehoboth, MA) led the Rams with 14 points and seven rebounds on 7-14 shooting. Senior Kerry Bowman (Guilford, CT) netted 12 points in the contest, to go along with five boards. Freshman Julianne Conrad (West Bridgewater, MA) scored ten points and added eight rebounds.

Kathy Andrade led the Lions with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Rachel Kaye finished her night with 14 points and seven rebounds. Lauren Vassallo added eight points and 11 rebounds.

Emerson opened up the overtime period taking a four-point lead on three different occasions. Suffolk’s Laura Thompson (Kennebunk, ME) banked in a three with 1:22 remaining to cut Emerson’s lead to 59-58. Meghan Black (Roslindale, MA) followed up Thompson’s three with a steal and assisted senior Emily Duquette (Harrisville, RI) on a lay-up and a foul to give the Rams a 60-59 lead. Duquette later missed the free-throw. She finished with six points and six rebounds.

Thompson made it a 61-59 game with 31 seconds remaining with a free-throw, but missed the back end of the one and one, giving the Lions a chance to tie it. Unfortunately for Suffolk, Rachel Kaye sent home a three-pointer with 16 seconds left to put Emerson up 62-61.

Julianne Conrad missed a potential game-winner with five seconds remaining and the Rams sent Andrea Kosek to the line with just four seconds to go. Kosek missed the free-throw, but Duquette’s heave from half-court caromed off the backboard as time expired.

Suffolk trailed 51-41 with 3:46 remaining in the second half. Black and Tracey combined for eight points on the 10-0 run to cut the lead to 51-49. Bowman added two free-throws with 27 seconds remaining to force overtime.

Emerson led 28-22 at halftime.

Emerson hosts Norwich University on Saturday at 3:00 pm. Suffolk heads to New Haven, Connecticut for its next game against Albertus Magnus Saturday at 1 p.m.
