BOSTON – After posting a 4-0 week in helping the Suffolk women's tennis team to a 2-0 start to its season for the first time since 2009, Valentina Medina was named GNAC Corvias Rookie of the Week Tuesday afternoon.
The native of San Andrés, Colombia had a win on the first and second singles courts, along with a pair of victories as the Rams' top doubles team alongside Aidiana Sagyndykova.
Medina got her collegiate career started with Sagyndykova in doubles action. The sophomore-junior partnership teamed up for an 8-5 triumph over Bridgewater State's Hayley Anderson and Alisha Silva. She did not falter in the singles second slot, as she cruised past Silva, 6-0, 6-1. Medina's two wins helped Suffolk tally a 'W' in the first match of the season for the first time in three years.
On Saturday, Suffolk and Medina continued to roll. After the top twosome of Sagyndykova and Medina took down Lesley's Caroline Kiddie and Frances De Leon, 8-1, Media made her debut as the Rams ace. She did not disappoint as she turned in a straight-set, 6-3, 6-0, triumph over Kiddie.
This is the first weekly honor for Medina, who is the first Ram to take home the conference's rookie of the week nod since Adrianna Garrett '15 garnered the accolade October 10, 2011.
Medina and Suffolk are back in action this evening when they look to win its third straight match at Rhode Island College at 4 p.m.
