Medina Tabbed GNAC Corvias Rookie of the Week

BOSTON – For the second time this season, Valentina Medina of the Suffolk women's tennis team has been recognized for her performance on the court as the sophomore has been tabbed GNAC Corvias Rookie of the Week.

Medina, who is undefeated in singles and doubles action this season, is the first player in the history of the Suffolk women's tennis program to be named the best rookie over a seven day stretch by the conference twice in one season.

In a three-match week, Medina notched a 6-0 record, going undefeated in both in singles and doubles play to help the Rams to a 2-1 record.

To open the week, Suffolk dropped a 6-3 decision at Roger Williams, but Medina prevailed. First in doubles, the San Andres, Columbia, native teamed up with Abby Trigilio for the first time this season. On the second court, the twosome posted an 8-4 victory over the Hawks' pair of Harley Kaiserman and Caroline McCarthy. In the second spot in the singles line-up, Medina took down Kathryn Hughes, 6-4, 6-1.

A day later, Medina and Trigilio joined forces again for an 8-6 win against UMass Dartmouth's Jenna Lahaie and Kerry Magoon. In singles, Medina sealed the win for the Rams with the first golden match of her career as she swept Magoon at No. 2.

In the conference opener on Saturday, Medina's play did not falter. Alongside Trigilio in the second doubles position, the team defeated the University of Saint Joseph's duo of Ashley Savino and Sakinah Abdulsalam, 8-1. For the second time in as many matches, Medina turned in a golden match performance in singles play against Lucy Roberge to help Suffolk to open the conference with a victory for the first time since the 2011 season.

The Rams and Medina are back in action Thursday, Sept. 24 when they take on Wentworth at Harvard University at 3:30 p.m.
