Wesleyan Tops Baseball, 9-7

Wesleyan Tops Baseball, 9-7

DAVENPORT, Fla. – Suffolk baseball dropped a back-and-forth battle with Wesleyan, 9-7, Wednesday night under the lights at NERP Complex at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 7 | Wesleyan 9
RECORDS: Suffolk (0-6) | Wesleyan (1-4)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A lead-off triple by Jack Mihalchik helped Suffolk grab a 1-0 lead in the first frame. The run scored courtesy of Luke Thornton's productive ground out to second.
  • The Cardinals flew in front 3-1 in the home half of the first behind two hits, a Rams' error and a wild pitch.
  • The distance doubled in the bottom of the second as Wesleyan tacked on two more runs thanks to three and a blue-and-gold fielding mishap.
  • Suffolk made up some ground in the top of the third. Shayne King singled and two batters later Thornton walked. After a loud out by Cole Hilliard to center, Sebastian Lampert's single to right scored King and put Rams on first and second. Sam Armbruster cleared the bags with a deep triple to left center to trim the deficit to one, 5-4.
  • Wesleyan got on back in the bottom of the fifth as back-to-back walks put runners on for James Marsden's RBI single to right field that put Suffolk in a 6-4 hole.
  • A two-run moon shot off Ross Treubig's bat locked things at 6-all. The sophomore's jack brought in Colin Flynn, who reached base on balls. The Rams offense did not stop there as Thornton's sac fly to right scored King, who wore a pitch, to give the blue-and-gold's its first lead of the night, 7-6.
  • A bases loaded hit by pitch and a ground rule, two-run double off Jonah Timmon pushed Wesleyan back in front, 9-6, in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Suffolk had an opportunity to respond in the sixth, but the Cardinals made the Rams strand a pair. The score stood still from there as Jack Raimo took over the mound for the blue-and-gold and Ned. Shapiro shut down the Rams bats.

  • Nick Rubin (4.0 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 5 K) and Raimo (1.2 IP, 1 K) both came in in relief for the Rams.
