UMass Dartmouth Clips Baseball, 9-1

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Suffolk baseball dropped a 9-1 decision to UMass Dartmouth Thursday afternoon at the UMass Dartmouth Baseball Field.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 1 | UMass Dartmouth 9
RECORDS: Suffolk (1-13) | UMass Dartmouth (7-13)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UMass Dartmouth broke onto the board first in the bottom of the first. An error on the lead-off batter, Jayden Cruz, let him reach safely before Cooper Wixon doubled to put a pair of Corsairs in scoring position. Brett Baker's ground out to first scored the first run of the day then Luc Nivaud singled to pad the host's lead to 2-0.
  • Suffolk sliced the distance to one in the top of the fourth. Luke Thornton singled and Mike Mullaney's double to left field pushed him to third. Thornton managed to score behind Stephen Nardelli's ground out to third to trim the gap to 2-1.
  • The Corsairs got that run back and then some in the home half of the inning thanks to Cooper Wixon's two-run single to right to put the blue-and-gold in a 4-1 hole.
  • UMass Dartmouth added one more run in the bottom of the fifth. This time the Corsairs capitalized on a fielding error by Suffolk's right fielder Jack Mihlachik to lengthen the gap to 5-1.
  • UMD continued to pour in the runs in its next turn at the dish and Suffolk found itself down 9-1.
  • The score stood still until the top of the ninth when the Rams juiced the bags as Nardelli singled, Noah Grecowalked and Mihalchik reached on an error by UMD's short stop Tommy Caporaso. The blue-and-gold stranded the runners on though as Sam Armbruster fouled out to right for the third out of the frame, and final of the day.
