EAST BOSTON – Suffolk baseball ended a marathon, 21-inning doubleheader in thrilling fashion as it walked-off against Gordon in the 10th inning, 4-3, in game two of the Conference of New England (CNE) twin bill Saturday at East Boston Memorial Park
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 4 | Gordon 3
RECORDS: Suffolk (2-14, 1-2 CNE) | Gordon (5-12, 1-2 CNE)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gordon grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third behind three hits, one walk and a Rams' error.
- The Rams put together a two-out rally in the home half of the inning to slice the gap in half as Sam Armbrusterdoubled to right and coasted in on a Fighting Scots fielding mishap when Sebastian Lampert put the ball in play.
- Gordon got that run back in the top of the fourth to restore the two-run margin. Back-to-back singles put Fighting Scots in the corners to set up a ground out RBI for Cael Smith.
- The back-and-forth carried into the bottom of the fourth as Suffolk put one more run on the board to pull back within one, 3-2. With two outs, Vasili Scangas made his way in from first, after reaching on a fielder's choice, behind Noah Greco's double to center.
- The score did not move, and all eyes would be on the bottom of the ninth with Suffolk down one. Mike Mullaney singled to right center to bring the winning run to the plate in pinch hitter Stephen Nardelli. Nardelli wore a pitch but was out on a fielder's choice when Scangas put the ball in play to put Rams in the corners. Greco came up clutch for the second straight game as worked a full count and brought in the tying run on ground out to second. Colin Flynn wore a pitch and that would end Matt Pancurak's day on the bump. Jacob Bettencourt came in to take over the hill and Jack Mihalchik barreled a hard hit ball down the third base line, that Smith managed to stop and tag the bag to send the game into extras.
- Armbruster drew a full-count bases loaded walk to get the lead-off runner on first. Lampert looked to move him over when he placed a bunt down, however, the Fighting Scots went to get Armbruster at second, instead, Bettencourt overthrew, which allowed Armbruster and Lampert to land on third and second, respectively. Luke Thornton, who's had a hot bat as of late as he entered the outing on a 12-game hit streak, was hitless up until this point. The freshman changed that as he kknocked a single down the left field line to bring in the game-winning run and send Suffolk to victory.
