BOSTON - The Suffolk baseball team will host a Skin Cancer Awareness Game on Saturday, April 18 against Roger Williams at 12:00pm in East Boston Memorial Park.
The game will be played in honor of Billy Waters, a teammate of both head coaches Anthony Del Prete (Suffolk) and Kevin Kelley (Roger Williams).
Waters, was a standout member of the Rams' baseball team from 2000 to 2003. Over his four-year collegiate career, he played a pivotal role in leading Suffolk to two Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships and NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances in 2000 and 2002. As the ace of the pitching staff, Waters etched his name into the program's record books, ranking among the all-time leaders in several categories including wins (3rd – 21), ERA (6th – 2.78), strikeouts (7th – 184), innings pitched (7th – 217), appearances (3rd – 52), and saves (2nd – 6). In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Watersl and his 2000 teammates were inducted into the Suffolk University Athletics Hall of Fame on May 4, 2013. That team's legacy endures, still holding the record for the most wins in a single season in the program's 80-year history, with 38 victories.
Waters passed away in May 2025 after a brief battle with melanoma.
As part of the event, Suffolk, in collaboration with Mass General Hospital will be offering free skin care checks for those in attendance for those who choose to do so from 11:00 a.m. through 1:00 p.m.
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer. The main types of skin cancer are squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Melanoma is much less common than the other types but much more likely to invade nearby tissue and spread to other parts of the body. Most deaths from skin cancer are caused by melanoma.
