EAST BOSTON – Suffolk baseball dropped a 16-5 Conference of New England (CNE) decision to Wentworth Tuesday afternoon at East Boston Memorial Park.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 5 | Wentworth 16
RECORDS: Suffolk (4-21, 2-8 CNE) | Wentworth (16-11, 6-4 CNE)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A one-out solo shot by Christian Romncal gave the Leopards a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
- Colin Flynn barreled a double to center to put the tying run on second in the home half of the first, but the Ram was stranded there to keep the one-run margin in favor of WIT.
- Harry Meehan and the blue-and-gold found itself in a bases loaded, one-out jam in the second behind two walks and one base hit. Wentworth managed to get three runs out of to turn the gap into 4-0 through 1.5 frames.
- Suffolk made up some ground in the bottom of the second. Mike Mullaney's single to left started the two-out rally. Nick Antoniewicz walked to push Mullaney into scoring position in time for Vasili Scangas' RBI double to left field that trimmed the distance to three.
- The ground that the Rams made up was erased in in the top of the third as Wentworth used a wild pitch to restore its four-run advantage. The Leopards got into scoring position behind Matt Robinson base hit and a Josh Turcotte double down the right field line. The visitors did not step there as they capitalized on a fresh arm in reliever Nick Arnett to extend the edge to 8-1.
- Following a scoreless fourth, Wentworth used three hits and a sac fly to lengthen its lead to 9-1.
- A pair of one-run singles up the middle off Sam Armbruster's and Luke Thornton's bats pulled the host within six, 9-3, in the bottom of the fifth.
- The mercy-rule was turned on by Wentworth behind a four-run seventh that made it 13-3 Leopards.
- A two-run, ground-rule double by Mullaney in the bottom of the seventh chipped the deficit down to eight. The junior plated Cole Hilliard and Sebastian Lampert, who both walked.
- A scoreless eighth was followed by a three-run ninth by Wentworth that put the Rams in a 16-5 hole.
- Armburster was able to work a one-out walk, but Lampert grounded into a double play in the next at bat to keep it an 11-run setback.
