Roger Williams Rallies by Baseball in Game One in Extras, 7-6

EAST BOSTON – Roger Williams eliminated the Rams four-run lead in the ninth, tied it up and forced extras where Suffolk baseball ultimately fell to the Hawks, 7-6, in the 10th in the opening-game of a Conference of New England (CNE) doubleheader Saturday at East Boston Memorial Park.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 6 | Roger Williams 7
RECORDS: Suffolk (4-22, 2-9 CNE) | Roger Williams (13-13, 6-5 CNE)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Will Florio led off the third with a solo shot to left field to put the Hawks on the board.
  • The Rams leveled the playing field in the bottom of the fourth. Sam Armbruster singled up the middle and swiped second to get into scoring position. Luke Thornton moved the Ram another 90-feet with a sac bunt in time for Sebastian Lampert to plate the tying run with a productive ground out to third that made it a 1-all game.
  • Suffolk used a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth to sneak in front. Armbruster singled to left and stole second before Thornton walked. A failed pickoff attempt overthrown by RWU's pitcher Louie Mosca allowed Armbruster to score and Thornton to take second. Lampert's bat came up big for the blue-and-gold once again as the designated hitter's single up the middle scored Thornton and gave the host a 3-1 lead.
  • Insurance came for the blue-and-gold in the eighth. A couple errors and a stolen base allowed Colin Flynn to find himself on third, before he scored on another Hawks' fielding mishap when Armbruster put the ball in play. RWU made a chance on the hill as Ryan Camp came in to shove for Mosca. Thornton managed to single off the new arm and bring in Armbruster, who stole second to get into scoring position, to pad the distance to 5-1.
  • That ground proved not enough as Roger Williams flew back and leveled the playing field on five hits and one walk.
  • Suffolk had chances to walk off in the home half of the ninth, but stranded the two Rams to send the game into extras.
  • In the 10th, the Hawks snuck back in front, 7-5, to put Suffolk back on its heels. Lampert barreled a one-out triple down the right field line and scored when Mike Mullaney knocked a ground-rule double to left. Pinch hitter Noah Greco pushed the tying run in Mullaney to third on a sac bunt, which brought up freshman Vasili Scangas with two outs. The rookie went down swinging to seal the blue-and-gold setback.
