Baseball Secures Split, Defeats RWU in Game Two, 7-5

EAST BOSTON – Suffolk baseball overcame an extra-inning, game one loss, with a 7-5 nightcap victory over Roger Williams to split the Conference of New England (CNE) double feature with the Hawks Saturday afternoon at East Boston Memorial Park.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 7 | Roger Williams 5
RECORDS: Suffolk (5-22, 3-9 CNE) | Roger Williams (13-14, 6-6 CNE)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Noah Hester reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored behind Braden Ventu's single to left center.
  • A two-run homer by Sam Armbruster flipped the script in the blue-and-gold's favor in the bottom of the fourth. The senior sent a ball over the left center fence and brought in Cole Hilliard along with him to give Suffolk a 2-1 margin.
  • The teams swapped four runs in the fifth. The Hawks rallied around two hits, one walk, one hit by pitch and a sac fly. The Rams, meanwhile, capitalized on four hits and one Roger Williams error to remain in front, 6-5, through five.
  • Insurance came for the blue-and-gold in the bottom of the seventh. Jack Mihalchik doubled and two batters later used Hilliard's single to right field to turn it into a two-run game, 7-5.
  • History did not repeat itself from game one as the Hawks went down in order in the top of the ninth to lock up the win for Suffolk.

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Ian Maude picked up the win behind a one-hit, two-walk, three-strikeout performance over 4.2 innings of relief.
  • Start John McDevitt allowed five runs, four earned, on four hits and one walk with two strikeouts over 4.1 innings.
  • Matthew Donovan suffered the setback as he gave up six runs, five earned, on nine hits and two walks with a pair of punchouts in 4.1 innings.
