DUDLEY, Mass. – A seven-run sixth inning by the Bison proved to be the difference as Suffolk baseball fell behind and could not catch up to Nichols, ultimately dropping the closer of a Conference of New England (CNE) twin bill, 10-3, Saturday at Nichols' Baseball Field.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 3 | Nichols 10
RECORDS: Suffolk (7-25, 4-11 CNE) | Nichols (18-16, 8-7 CNE)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Suffolk jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second. Luke Thornton singled through the left side and used Cole Hilliard's double to left center to land on third. A fielder's choice when Mike Mullaney put the ball into play allowed Thornton to come home to put the blue-and-gold on the board.
- The score stood still until the bottom of the fifth when Adam PIvacek's two-run bomb pushed the Bison in front, 2-1.
- The Bison lengthened their lead to 9-1 in the bottom of the sixth behind four hits and two Rams' errors.
- That gap grew even more in the seventh as Nichols tacked on one more run to make it a nine-run margin.
- Suffolk attempted a battle back in the ninth as it filled up the bases on one-out singles to force a pitching change. A bases loaded hit by pitch brought in one run before Shayne King's single plated another. Jack Mihalchik grounded into a double play, however, to seal the Suffolk setback.
