WALTHAM, Mass. – Suffolk baseball returned to the win column Sunday afternoon as hit took down Lasell, 9-4, in game one of a non-conference doubleheader at Stein Diamond.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 9 | Lasell 4
RECORDS: Suffolk (8-25) | Lasell (18-18)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lasell leapt out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With runners on second and third, Connor Freitas' sac fly brought the first run of the day in before a bobble by Suffolk's shortstop allowed another Laser to cross home for the two-run margin.
- The Rams responded in the top of the second. Like the host, the blue-and-gold had runners on second and third to set up Shayne King's one-run single that trimmed the margin in half, 2-1. The freshman scored his classmate, Luke Thornton, who walked and used Sebastian Lampert's double to land on third base.
- Suffolk jumped in front in the top of the third. Back-to-back base hits put two ducks in the pond for Colin Flynn, who doubled to left center. He brought in the first, while the second was called out at the plate to level the playing field. The scoring did not stop there though, as Cole Hilliard and Sam Armbruster followed with one-run doubles of their own to give the blue-and-gold a 4-2 advantage.
- Lasell cut the Rams edge down to 4-3 in the home half of the third behind a bases loaded walk.
- A three-run bomb off Lampert's bat extended Suffolk's cushion to 7-3 in the top of the fifth.
- The Lasers tacked on one run in the bottom of the sixth. Callahan Bullens worked a walk and Hayden Nunley took his place on the bags. Nunley stole second to get into scoring position in time to come around on Bobby Long's single to center.
- The Rams got that one run back and added another in the top of the seventh. With the bases full on two walks and one hit by pitch, King doubled to right field to bring two runs around and stretch the lead to 9-4.
- Jack Raimo came in to close for Suffolk and despite one base runner on an infield base hit, the pitcher got out of the inning unharmed to lock up the victory.
