Baseball Stumbles in Game One at JWU in Seven Innings

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Suffolk baseball fell in the opening game of a Conference of New England (CNE) double feature with Johnson & Wales, 15-5, in seven innings at the Scots Miracle Gro Athletic Complex. Baseball Field Friday afternoon.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 5 | Johnson & Wales 15
RECORDS: Suffolk (8-28, 4-13 CNE) | Johnson & Wales (14-24, 5-12 CNE)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A one-run triple in the top of the first off Sam Armbruster's bat gave the blue-and-gold a one-run edge early. Armbruster plated Cole Hilliard, who reached on an error by the Wildcats' shortstop Yedan Diaz.
  • JWU wasted no time to respond as it put up five runs in the home half of the first on six hits ignited by a solo shot by Jack Obert.
  • The four-run margin remained until the bottom of the third when the Wildcats lengthened the lead to 6-1 courtesy of a Suffolk fielding mishap.
  • The Rams made up that run in the top of the fourth. Luke Thornton waited on second after walking and taking advantage of a wild pitch. Stephen Nardelli's single to right brought the freshman around to trim the gap to four, 6-2.
  • Two innings later, JWU restored the five-run distance behind a bases loaded walk.
  • Suffolk rallied in the seventh. With Rams in the corners thanks to a lead-off error and Jack Mihalchik single through the right side, Colin Flynn's single to third base plated the first run. One out later, a throwing error by JWU's backstop let the second run of the frame come in before Armbruster scarified himself with a loud out to right that allowed Flynn to score, which pulled the blue-and-gold within two, 7-5.
  • All the ground that the Rams made up was quickly erased as the Wildcats poured in eight on eight hits to lock up the 10-run, 15-5 decision.

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Anthony Ferreira took the loss as he gave up seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits and four walks with three strikeouts.
  • John McDevitt (6 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 1 K, 0.1 IP) and Jackson Garcia (2 R, 3 H, 1 BB) came in in relief.
  • Colin Nockels earned the decision behind a two-hit, one-strikeout, 1.1-inning outing out of the pen.
  • Max Randazzo (3.1 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 6 K), Nick Calenda (1.0 IP, 2 BB, 2 K), Brady Morin (1.0 IP, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 K) and Michael Cobb (0.1 IP) saw time on the bump for JWU.
