Men’s Soccer Shutouts Wentworth in Regular-Season Finale, 3-0

BOSTON – Three different Rams scored and Nathan Harlow had a six-save effort to push Suffolk men's soccer past Wentworth, 3-0, Tuesday night at Sweeney Field in the Conference of New England foes respective regular-season finale.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk's third corner kick of the day paid off as Diego Pierantozzi headed Ford Lee's kick home to give the Rams the 1-0 edge at the 17:51 mark.  

Damon Smargon padded the margin to a pair just about 10 minutes later. The senior converted a Wentworth turnover into a laser of a goal as he connected on the high left side of the net from the top corner of the box to make it 2-0 Suffolk.  

Suffolk extended its advantage to 3-0 in the 55th minute. Pierantozzi lofted the ball across the field to Luke Blawn, who headed a center pass to Miguel Varela, who headed it home to stretch the distance to three goals.  

KEEPING UP WITH THE KEEPERS

• Harlow finished the night with six saves in the shutout. 
• Noah Lawless took the loss with the three-save effort. 
• Adrian Sanchez turned aside the two shots he faced.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

• Pierantozzi registered a three-point night with one goal and one assist. 
• Smargon and Varela supplied one goal apiece. 
• Lee and Blawn dished out one assist each. 
• Suffolk outshot Wentworth, 20-15, including an 8-6 edge in shots on target. 
• The Rams had more corner kick chances as well, 7-3.  

NOTEWORTHY

• Suffolk leveled the series that dates back to 1989 with Wentworth at 7-7-2. 
• The Rams have won three games in a row against the Leopards, the most wins in a row versus WIT since winning four straight from Sept. 22, 1994 through Sept. 25, 1997. 
• The blue-and-gold is now 4-4-2 when playing WIT on the road. 
• In the last five meetings, Suffolk has outscored Wentworth, 11-2. 
• Seven games have been decided in shutout fashion. Suffolk is 4-3-0 in cleansheets against WIT. 
• As conference counterparts, Suffolk is 3-2-0 against Wentworth. 
• The Rams are now 3-2-0 versus WIT with Bill Maddock as the coach. 
• Harlow had his sixth shutout of the season. 
• Pierantozzi put away his third goal of the season and dished out his fourth assist of the year. 
• Smargon scored his fourth goal of the year. 
• Varela put away his second goal of the season. 
• Lee logged his third assist of the campaign. 
• Blawn set-up the second goal of his career, both of which have come this season.

Suffolk has already clinched the second seed in the 2024 CNE Postseason. The Rams await the official seeding of the tournament, which should be released at the conclusion of all regular-season contests later this evening.
