The Babson College men's tennis team handed visiting Suffolk University its first loss in nearly two years on Thursday, as the Beavers defeated the Rams, 6-3, in non-conference action at the Farwell Courts.
It was the third straight win for Babson (7-10), while Suffolk (9-1) saw its 24-match winning streak come to a halt with its frst defeat since April 16, 2009.
The Beavers took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, thanks to a pivotal victory by senior captain Austin Conti (Murray Hill, N.J.) and sophomore Nissim Cohen-Sabban (Chula Vista, Calif.) at number two. After the two teams split the matches at one and three, Conti and Cohen-Sabban teamed up to edge Suffolk first-year Hubert Cromback (Paris, France) and senior John Samander (Willemstad, Curacao) by a score of 8-6 at the second position.
Conti pushed the Babson lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at number two singles, but Samander answered with a 6-0, 6-2 win at number five. The Beavers then clinched the overall win with two more straight-set victories, as sophomore Simeon Human (Trelex, Vaud, Switzerland) won his match at number three, 6-3, 6-1, and classmate Mitchell Henry (Wellesley, Mass.) added a 6-2, 7-5 triumph at number one.
Cromback recorded Suffolk's final point of the day with a 7-6 (4), 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) superbreaker win at number four, and Babson sophomore Rushab Tanna (Burlington, Mass.) capped off his team's victory with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-0 comeback win at number six.
Both teams return to action with conference matches on Saturday at 1 p.m., as Babson hosts NEWMAC rival Springfield College and Suffolk welcomes GNAC foe Johnson & Wales
