Marc Winkler Named GNAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year

Senior Marc Winkler (Carcas, Venezuela) was named the 2015 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Year as the league announced its award winners on Tuesday.

Winkler finished the year a perfect 9-0 in singles play on the season for Suffolk. He won five of his nine matches in the top individual spot while also recording four wins in the number two position. Winkler also posted a 9-0 record in doubles play as he totaled 18 wins on the season in singles and partners play combined during the 2015 season.

Winkler wraps up a four year career that saw him win a total of 23 matches in singles play since the 2012 season. He was named the 2012 GNAC Rookie of the Year. Winkler rounds out with a 23-8 singles record and 25-7 doubles record.

Junior Calixto Romero (Lima, Peru) was also named a first-team All-Conference selection by the GNAC for the 2015 season.  Romero posted an 8-1 record on the year winning all five of his matches in the second individual spot while also putting together a 3-1 record in the top singles position. Romero was named the GNAC Player of the Year for 2014.

Both Romero and Winkler were named a second team All-Conference selection as a doubles tandem. The duo won all nine of their matches on the year.

Romero was also named to the GNAC Sportsmanship team.

Freshman Alonso Vela (Calexico, Calif.) earned second team All-Conference honors for singles play. Vela was 5-3 on the year playing in the number three position for Suffolk.

Suffolk finished the year with a 6-3 overall record. They were the second seed in the GNAC North Division. The Rams were eliminated by Norwich University 5-4 in the GNAC Tournament semifinals.
