Newhall Throws Softball to 2-1 Win Over Juniata

CLERMONT, Fla. – Lily Newhall had a standout showing in the circle to pace Suffolk softball to a 2-1 triumph over Juniata Wednesday afternoon at Hancock Park at The Spring Games.  

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Three Juniata hits resulted in one run in the top of the first. 
  • Suffolk answered with two runs of their own in the home half of the inning to grab the lead. Jolie Quintana led off with a base hit to center and a fielder's choice when Catherine Carignan put the ball into play two batters later put runners in the corners. Julia Mills knocked a single down the right field line to bring in Quintana before Newhall laced a double down the opposite foul line to plate Carignan for the 2-1 margin. 
  • Zeroes went up on the scoreboard the rest of the way as the twirling of Newhall limited the Falcons to just three base runners, two in the second and one in the seventh, to preserve the victory.  

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Newhall finished the day with one run allowed on six hits and one walk with six strikeouts in the complete-game effort. 
  • Cheyenne Silvis took the loss as she allowed two runs on eight hits and one punchout in 5.0 innings. 
  • Gracie Ruch shoved 1.0 inning of scoreless relief and let up one hit. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Newhall helped herself as she went 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. The pitcher was the only Ram to have an extra-base hit with a double. 
  • Mills also went 2-for-3 with one RBI. 
  • Quintana rounded out the Rams with multiple hits with a 2-for-3 performance of her own to go along with one run scored. 
  • Carignan contributed one hit and one run scored. 
  • Lanza and Sara Butera chipped in one hit apiece. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk and Juniata met for the second time, first since March 12, 2024. 
  • Suffolk moved to 2-0 all-time against Juniata. 

Both contests between Suffolk and Juniata have come in the Megan Cook era and on neutral diamonds. 

  • Butera has produced a hit in every game she made a plate appearance this season. 
  • Quintana (5 games, 7 hits), Mills (7 games, 13 hits), Newhall (4 games, 5 hits), Carignan (3 games, 4 hits) and Butera (3 games, 3 hits) all extended their hit streaks.

Suffolk concludes its time at The Spring Games tomorrow, Thursday, March 12 with two more games. The Rams will face Heidelberg at 1:30 p.m., before taking on Haverford at 3:45 p.m. at Legends Way.
