Softball Secures Sweep, Bats by Brandeis in Nightcap, 9-4

WALTHAM, Mass. – A four run-sixth inning by the Rams put the game away as Suffolk softball held off Brandeis in the sixth to hold on for the 9-4 victory as the game was called due to darkness at Marcus Field with six innings in the books.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 9 | Brandeis 4
RECORDS: Suffolk (9-7) | Brandeis (9-6)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Suffolk jumped out to 2-0 lead in the first frame. Catherine Carignan's two-out solo shot put the Rams on the board. Julia Mills walked and stole second to get into scoring position in time for Lily Newhall to collect an RBI with a base hit to center.
  • The Judges sliced the distance down to one in the bottom of the second. Jordan Wallace singled and took second on a wild pitch. After two outs, Kastie Baydian's single up the middle plated Wallace to trim the gap two 2-1.
  • A two-run single off Abby Barnaby's bats in the top of the third stretch Suffolk's advantage to three, 4-1 in the top of the third.
  • Brandeis made things interested in the home half of the fourth when Baydian knocked a two-run jack to slice the distance to 4-3.
  • The teams one run in the fifth to keep the one-run gap intact. Suffolk's score came behind Newhall's sac fly that plated mills, who reached on a single to right.
  • Suffolk's bats came alive in t4eh sixth. With runners on second and third thanks Barnaby walk, Roma Braid single and a wild pitch, Jolie Quintana's single to the pitcher brought the first run of the frame in. Ava Lanzaand Carignan racked up RBIs on a single and double before the Judges made a change in the circle. Mills' ground out to second was productive as it allowed Lanza to score and made it a 9-4 cushion in the blue-and-gold's favor.
  • Brandeis saw two base runners in the bottom of the sixth, but a caught steal and a pop up to left locked up the win for Suffolk.
