Softball Upended in Game Two at JWU, 16-5

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Suffolk softball saw its five-game win streak come to a halt Sunday afternoon as the Rams were tripped up by Johnson & Wales in game two of a Conference of New England (CNE) double feature at Scots Miracle Gro Athletic Complex.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 5 | Johnson & Wales 16
RECORDS: Suffolk (11-8, 2-2 CNE) | Johnson & Wales (7-7, 2-2 CNE)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Johnson & Wales jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first behind two hits and one walk.
  • The Wildcats tripled that margin in the top of the second on four hits and one error.
  • Suffolk got two runs back in the home half of the inning with a two-out rally. Roma Braid singled, Dana Stillwore a pitch and Jolie Quintana walked to put all the ducks in the pond. Ava Lanza's base hit to center brought in two before Catherine Carignan's base hit to right scored Quintana to trim the deficit to 6-3.
  • The Rams aimed to catch up more in the bottom of the third. With the bases juiced once again, a fielder's choice when Still put the ball into play allowed Julia Mills, who reached on an error, cross home and pull the blue-and-gold within two, 6-4.
  • A three-run dinger off Mady Lyons' bat pushed the margin to 9-4 in the Wildcats' favor in the top of the fourth.
  • Suffolk continued to comeback in the bottom of the fifth as Quintana collected one RBI on a bases load single to center that brought in Kendal Heyman, who pinch hit and worked a walk. That run pulled the Rams within four.
  • It was all JWU the rest of the way as it put up three more runs in the sixth and tacked on four more in the seventh for the lopsided 16-5 final.

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Lily Newhall took the setback as she gave up six runs, four earned, on six hits and one walk through 1.0 inning.
  • Cynthia Rucinski (10 R, 12 hits, 4 BB, 3 Ks) also came into the circle for Suffolk and worked 6.0 innings of relief.
  • Madi Wong picked up the decision behind a one-run, five-hit, two-walk effort over 4.0 frames.
