Softball Suffers 7-5 Game 2 Setback at Simmons

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Suffolk softball could not complete a comeback rally and fell to Simmons, 7-5, in the nightcap of a non-league twin bill Friday afternoon at Daly Field.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 5 | Simmons 7
RECORDS: Suffolk (11-9) | Simmons (9-16)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Simmons grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Trinity Payne's single through the right side brought in Nevaeh Eth. Eth walked, advanced to second on Emery Kreidel-Reimer's base hit and landed on second when Teagan Buckley put the ball in play.
  • The Rams flipped the script in its favor in the top of the third. With two outs and Roma Braid on second, Ava Lanza laced a single up the middle that moved the runner over, but the paly did not stop there as back-to-back fielding mishaps by the Sharks' infield allowed the runners to come in and send Suffolk in front, 2-1.
  • See-saw action carried into the bottom of the fourth as Simmons swam back in front, 3-2, courtesy of Isabel McLam's two-run single.
  • Insurance came for the Sharks in the bottom of the sixth as the host lengthened its lead to 7-2 on three hits and a pair of Rams errors.
  • Ally Hyde came in to deal for Simmons in the top of the seventh. The Rams capitalized on the fresh arm as three straight walks juiced the bags in time for Kendal Heyman's RBI single. Braid then drew a bases loaded walk to bring the second run of the day, which forced the Sharks to bring Trinity Payne back in to pick. Payne quickly got the first out and the second, but that was a sac fly off Jolie Quintana's bat that trimmed the distance down to two. That's as close as the blue-and-gold would get as Claire Basaldua popped up to third for the last out of the outing.

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Lily Newhall suffered the setback as she let up seven runs, four earned, on 10 hits and two walks with two strikeouts through 6.0 innings.
  • Payne picked up the win behind a two-run (one-earned), three-hit, two-walk, one-strikeout performance in 7.0 innings of work.
  • Hyde allowed three runs on one hit and four walks out of the Sharks' pen.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Heyman contributed a 2-for-3 effort with one RBI and one run scored.
  • Lanza brought in one run one on hit and scored once.
  • Quintana logged one RBI thanks to a sac fly.
  • Braid notched one RBI, one run, one stolen base and one walk.
  • Dana Still recorded one hit and one stolen base.
  • Julia Mills scored one run and added one stolen base.
  • Newhall notched one run.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Heyman had a personal-best two hits and collected the first RBI of her collegiate career.
  • Lanza extended her hit streak to three games. In that span she has four hits.
  • Still has supplied at least one hit in the last five games. She has six hits in that stretch.
