UNE Walks Off Softball in 11th Inning, 7-6

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Suffolk softball fell to the University of New England, 7-6, in 11 innings Saturday afternoon at Nor'Easter Diamond.  

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Zofia Twarog doubled to third base for the Nor'Easters and Tess Bolduc traded places with her with a two-bagger of her own to give UNE a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the first. 
  • Base hits and singles paid off for Suffolk in the top of the second. Lily Newhall started the rally with a single to center, moved to second on Dana Still's sac bunt and coasted home thanks to Catherine Carignan's single to center to even things at 1-1.
  • Suffolk snuck in front in the top of the third. Jolie Quintana led off with a double down the left field line and used Roma Braid's sac bunt to take third. Ava Lanza's base hit to left brought in the go-ahead run for the Rams, 2-1. 
  • The Nor'Easters leveled the playing field in the home half of the third, as a lead off walked coupled with a sac and Rams error made it a 2-2 game. 
  • See-saw action carried into the top of the fourth. Newhall tripled to right center and Still's double to left brought in the go-ahead run. Two outers later Kendal Heyman's single to left plated Still to pad the margin to a pair, 4-2. 
  • UNE's Adrianna Carsetti went yard in the bottom of the fourth and a one-run game was back intact, 4-3. 
  • The Nor'Easters stormed back to knot things once again in the bottom of the fifth. Delaney Whitten walked and advanced to third when Hannah Lappin double down the left field line. A wild pitch allowed the runners to advance including the game-tying run. 
  • The score stayed there through the seven-inning regulation despite both teams getting a base runner in the seventh. 
  • The teams exchanged one run in the in the eighth and ninth to send the game into the 10th, which went scoreless on both sides to send the action to the 11th. 
  • The Rams went down in order in the top of the inning, but the Nor'Easters had other things in mind for their turn at the plate. Adrianna Carsetti put down a bunt to move the ghost runner, who scored easily on Fiona Casey to push UNE to the 7-6 extra-inning victory. 

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Cynthia Rucinski took the loss as she gave up three runs, all unearned, on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts. 
  • Newhall let up four runs on five hits and two walks and two punchouts. 
  • Liv Anderson picked up the win with two unearned runs allowed on two hits and two walks. 
  • Kara MacDonald let up four runs on seven hits and one walk with two punchouts through 4.0 innings. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Newhall went 3-for-4 with a triple to go along with two runs scored and one walk. 
  • Quintana recorded one hit, a double, one RBI, one run and one walk. 
  • Lanza logged one hit, one RBI and one sac.
  • Still supplied one hit, a double, one RBI, one run and one sac.
  • Carignan chipped in two RBI and one hit with one sac fly. 
  • Claire Basaldua notched one hit and one run. 
  • Heyman tallied one hit and one RBI. 
  • Mills scored one run.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Lanza (4 games, 5 hits), Still (6 games, 7 hits), and Heyman (2 games, 3 hits) extended their hits streaks. 
  • Newhall matched a career-high three hits.
