HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Suffolk grabbed a 1-0 edge in the second. Dana Still placed a single inside the right field line to land on first. Abby Barnaby placed a perfect bunt down to move her over, but heads up bases running sent Still to third. The Fighting Scots second baseman Emily Hutchins tried to make the play at the hot corner, but over threw the bag, which allowed Still to coast into home for the first run of the day.
  • Two innings later, Suffolk doubled the distance. Dana Still and Barnaby waited on second and first after reaching on a base hit and fielder's choice. A passed ball moved the runners 60 feet in prime scoring position in time for Kendal Heyman's deep ball to center. The Fighting Scots Peyton Heitzman managed to make the catch, but Still tagged up and scored to pad the margin to a pair.
  • Gordon got on the board in the top of the sixth. Morgan Barrett singled through the left side and swiped second to get into scoring position. Isabella Rivera brought Barrett around with a double to left center that trimmed the Rams' cushion to one, 2-1.
  • Insurance came for the blue-and-gold in the home half of the sixth. Back-to-back one-out base hits by Catherine Carignan and Still put two ducks in the pond for Heyman. The freshman outfielder barreled a bases' clearing two-bagger to left and scored when Roma Braid singled to center to turn it into a 5-1 Suffolk game.
  • Newhall retired the side and put an exclamation point on the win with a swinging K for the final out.
