Softball Edged by Wentworth in Game Two, 3-1

REVERE, Mass. – Suffolk softball dropped the Conference of New England (CNE) nightcap to Wentworth, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Griswold Park.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 1 | Wentworth 3
RECORDS: Suffolk (17-16, 8-8 CNE) | Wentworth (13-24, 9-9 CNE)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A two-run jack off Lauren Trostel's bat in the first frame gave the Leopards a 2-0 lead.
  • The Rams sliced the gap in half in the bottom of the third behind Julia Mills' sac fly. The bases were full behind a Roma Braid walk, Ava Lanza single and Dana Still hit by pitch to set-up the junior's long out RBI.
  • Suffolk put a pair of runners on in the fifth thanks to back-to-back one-out hits. The Rams were stranded there, however, as the Leopards' defense used a fielder's choice and a lout out to center to get out of the inning.
  • Following a scoreless sixth, WIT added to its advantage in the top of the seventh. Kyla Igawa worked a full-count walk and Trostel advanced her 90-feet with a single up the middle. Kelsey Medalia's single down the left field line lengthened the visitors lead to 3-1.
  • Braid walked and Jolie Quintana singled to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. Ava Lanza lined into a double play, but the Rams still had a chance with the tying run at bat in Still. Still flew out to the short stop though and that wrapped up the outing in favor of the Leopards.

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Lily Newhall took the loss as she gave up three runs on nine hits and three walks with five strikeouts over 6.1 innings.
  • Cynthia Rucinski threw 0.2 innings of scoreless, hitless relief.
  • Julia Malowitz compiled a one-run, seven-hit, two-walk, one-strikeout, complete-game performance.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Mills brought in one run on a sac fly.
  • Quintana and Lanza both went 2-for-4.
