The Emerson College Lions (9-14, 7-3 GNAC) used a monster run in the second half to top the Suffolk University Rams (14-9, 8-2 GNAC), 69-61 on Saturday afternoon at the Regan Gymnasium. With the win the Lions improve to 6-3 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play, while the Rams fall to 8-2. The loss snaps Suffolk's eight game winning streak at home.
Sophomore Shannon Norton (Middletown, N.J.) led all scorers with 23 points of the bench for the Lions, as she was 4-for-8 from three-point land.
The Lions used an 8-0 run to close the first half cutting the Suffolk lead to 32-28 after the Rams managed to build a 15-point lead earlier in the period.
Emerson would come out of the break strong going on a 23-3 run in the opening ten minutes of play in the second half and built their largest lead of the contest when a three-point shot by sophomore Amy Sherman (Toronto, Ontario) made it 55-39 with eight and a half minutes remaining.
Sophomore Jacqueline Vienneau (Salem, N.H.) would connect on a trey of her own with 2:16 remaining to bring the Rams within six points, but the momentum swung back in favor of the Lions as freshman Elissa Chojnicki (Dover, N.H.) sunk a free throw following a layup to spread the Emerson lead back to nine points with ninety seconds remaining.
Freshman Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, Conn.) was the leading scorer for the Rams netting 15 points while collecting seven boards. Vienneau and junior Meghan Black (Roslindale, Mass.) each had 11 points for Suffolk.
Senior Kathy Andrade (Hull, Mass.) posted a double-double for the Lions collecting 12 points and 12 rebounds in the win.
The Lions held the edge in rebounds at 45-36. Perhaps the largest differential in the game was Suffolk's shooting percentage in the second half as the Rams shot 28 percent as a team in the final twenty minutes of play, compared to the 45 percent they shot from the field in the opening half.
Both teams will be back in GNAC action on Tuesday. Emerson will travel to Standish, ME to take on the Monks of St. Joseph's College at 7:00pm. Suffolk will travel to Norwich University for a 5:30pm tipoff.
