Mahoney, Stewart to Captain Women’s Basketball in 2023-24

BOSTON – Suffolk women's basketball's head coach Ed Leyden has unveiled that a pair of upperclassmen will take the reigns as co-captains for the 2023-24 season in graduate student Madi Mahoney and junior Maddie Stewart.

"Both women are team first players and understand that first and foremost a leader has to lead by example," Leyden said.

The duo begins their first term in the captain role and are the second straight twosome to share the role following in Amanda DeAngelis' and Katie Kirsh's footsteps.

After a season sidelined due to injury, Stewart emerged in Suffolk's starting line-up a year ago and was an everyday contributor on both sides of the hardwood. The guard from Conway, New Hampshire, supplied 11.0 points per game and 8.3 rpg, both of which sat second on the team.

Mahoney, meanwhile, brought her talents to Beacon Hill from SNHU. The graduate transfer that hails from Derry, New Hampshire, added 7.5 points to Suffolk's 63.3 points per game offense.

Stewart and Mahoney make-up 40 percent of the Rams' returners as Coach Leyden brought in eight fresh faces to round out his squad.

Suffolk's 2023-24 season debut is on tap for tonight, Wednesday, Nov. 8 versus Emerson at 5 p.m. at Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court
