HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first quarter featured four lead changes and four tied scores with Rivier up slightly, 21-18, at the end of 10 minutes.
- Suffolk commanded the first five minutes of the second stanza as it scored eight straight to retake the advantage. Allison Bono was responsible for half the offensive output in that stretch that gave the host a 26-21 cushion.
- After the teams traded points, the Rams rattled off a quarter-ending 13-4 span to build a 39-27 edge into halftime.
- The blue-and-gold managed to build a double-digit distance in the third quarter, 57-41.
- Suffolk managed to hold off a Raiders comeback throughout the fourth to hang on for the 75-64 victory.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
- Bono paced Suffolk's scoring with 17 points behind an 8-for-14 effort from the field to go along with eight caroms, and one assist.
- Olivia Verdile joined Bono in double figures with 11 points. The junior's stat line featured seven boards and three helpers as well.
- Tatiana Tune tallied nine points, six rebounds, one block and one steal.
- Ariana Ingram registered nine points, four rebounds, one swat and one takeaway.
- The Rams shot 43.3 percent (23-6) from the floor, 50.0 percent (7-14) from 3-point range and 66.7 percent (16-24) from the free throw line.
- The blue-and-gold outrebounded Rivier, 50-34.
- Suffolk capitalized on its 17 offensive boards with 18 second-chance points.
- Both team's benches provided 17 points.
NOTEWORTHY
- After tonight, the Rams are 24-19 in season debuts.
- Suffolk is 5-3 in season openers played inside the Ridgeway Building at Smith Court.
- Since Ed Leyden took over the helm 32 years ago, the blue-and-gold has gone 20-12 in the first game of the year.
- Suffolk defeated Rivier for the eighth consecutive meeting to lead the all-time series 27-5.
