BEVERLY, Mass. – Freshman Lauren Phelan of the Suffolk women's golf program has been named the Conference of New England (CNE) Rookie of the Week, becoming the first Ram in program history to secure the honor.
Phelan is the first Suffolk women's golfer to earn a rookie award since Krisna Mahendran picked up Northeast Women's Golf Conference (NWGC) Rookie of the Week Sept. 12, 2024. The recognition also keeps the spotlight on Suffolk, as Phelan follows Mahendran, who had collected the previous two CNE Women's Golfer of the Week accolades.
The North Reading, Massachusetts native made an immediate impact across two events last weekend. She opened with a 102 at the Hartford Tri-Match to tie for 16th and aid Suffolk in a 10-stroke team victory in the tri-match at Wintonbury Hill Golf Course in Bloomfield, Connecticut.
Phelan then bounced back with a career-best 90 at the Keene State Invitational, good for a fifth-place finish in the 38-player field. Her effort was part of Suffolk's record-breaking 332 score, the program's lowest team total at Keene Country Club and a score that not only topped the seven-team field, but bested runner-up, Keene State, by 41 strokes.
Behind Phelan's emergence, Jay Parker's squad has started the 2025 campaign with four consecutive team victories.
The Rams return to the course this weekend, Oct. 4–5 for the Bowdoin Invitational at Brunswick Country Club.
