Miranda, Rams Top JWU on Suffolk Spirit Night, 2-1

Freshman Taylor Miranda (Smithtown, N.Y.) set the Suffolk single-season record for goals scored netting her 21st to lead the Rams (11-2-1, 9-2 GNAC) to a 2-1 victory over the Johnson & Wales Wildcats (6-9-1, 4-4-1 GNAC) on Tuesday evening.

Miranda scored the game-winner in the game's sixty-sixth minute to give the Rams their seventh straight win as they close in on securing home-field advantage in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) playoffs.

Miranda passes teammate Leslie Hayden (Ross, Calif.) for most goals in a season. In fitting fashion it was Hayden who set the game deciding goal up bringing the ball down the right wing before handing it off to freshman Gabrielle Balestrier (Mohnton, Penn.) who delivered the cross-pass before Miranda knocked it into the net.

Freshman Natalie Favati (Singapore, Singapore) got the scoring started three minutes into the second half as she put home a header off of a free kick off of the foot of freshman Meghan McHale (Halifax, Mass.).

Johnson & Wales would battle back taking control offensively for the next 15 minutes of the second half rattling off eight shots. Junior Berkeley Cecchini-Bond (Saugus, Mass.) eventually found the back of the net for the Wildcats scoring in the game's sixty-fourth minute as she put home a rebound by junior Amanda Aguiar (Fall River, Mass.).

It would only take the Rams two minutes to answer with the game-winner.

The Wildcats outshot the Rams by a 15-7 margin in the game, including 10-2 in the second half, but Suffolk made both of their shots count as they were both goals.

Senior Emily Joyce (Easton, Mass.) made eight saves in the game for her eleventh win of the year.

Freshman Kara Collins (North Arlington, N.Y.) made two saves in goal for the Wildcats.

The game marked the last regular season home contest for Suffolk who will finish up their 2010 season on the road travelling to Norwich in GNAC action on Saturday, before travelling to Mass. Martime Academy on next Tuesday. Prior to the game Suffolk honored the first graduating class in Women's Soccer program four-year varsity history. The Rams honored Joyce, Graciela Sanchez (Milton, Mass.), Nancy Roxo (Shelton, Conn.), Emma Lobozzo (New Gloucester, Me.) and Janet Girardot (Redwood City, Calif.).

Johnson & Wales will be back in action on Saturday as they host Pine Manor College at 1:00pm.
