THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 0 | Maine Maritime. 3
RECORDS: Suffolk (2-5) | Maine Maritime (4-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Maine Maritime scored the first four points of the day and put Suffolk in a 7-1 hole that forced Scott Blanchard to use a timeout early. The Rams climbed back and cut the deficit down to a pair, 16-14, after Chloe Clement's first kill of the day was followed by Mackenzie Heaney's second ace. That distance was short lived as the Mariners outscored the blue-and-gold 9-4 to hand the host a 25-18 first frame loss.
- See-saw action consumed the opening of the second stanza with MMA up one, 6-5. Hannah Tate served four aces in a row for the visitors, which had Blanchard call his team over to talk things through. There was hope out of the huddle as Suffolk scored three in a row, but the Mariners charged ahead by nine, 17-8, with seven unanswered. That margin proved too large for the Rams to make up and they slipped in the second, 25-18.
- The lead swapped three times and the playing field leveled six with the last coming at 11-all. The Mariners grabbed the advantage and quickly built a 19-13 cushion. Suffolk battled back with five unanswered points to make it a one-point set once again, 19-18. MMA closed the set and match with five consecutive points, however, to take down the Rams, 25-18.
