MEDFORD, Mass. – Despite two dingers, Suffolk baseball fell to Tufts, 5-3, in the opening outing of a double feature Saturday afternoon at Sol Gittleman Park.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 3 | Tufts 5
RECORDS: Suffolk (1-9) | Tufts (9-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tufts took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second. With two outs and runners on first and second, Jesse McCullough's single through the left side brought the first run of the day in. Maclolm Whitfield cleared the bags with a double to left before he scored on Jack Kamin's base hit through the left side for the four-run margin.
- Suffolk sliced the gap in half in the top of the fourth courtesy of Sam Armbruster's two-run jack. The senior short stop brought in Cole Hilliard, who reached on an error, in with him to trim the deficit to 4-2. The Rams had an opportunity to make up more ground as Sebastian Lampert singled, but he was stranded there as the next two batters went down in order, to keep the two-run gap intact.
- The Jumbos got one run back in the home behind Kamin's one-run double to scored Whitfield, who led off with a triple to center.
- Following a scoreless fifth, Luke Thornton sent a ball out of the pack to bring the blue-and-gold back within two, 5-3.
- Ian Maude retired Tufts' side in the bottom of the sixth to keep the distance at two runs. Derek Desmarais came in to pitch for Emmet Christian and Mike Mullaney led off with a single to center to bring the tying run to the plate. Vasili Scangas went down swinging though and Jack Mihalchik grounded into a double play to end things in favor of the Jumbos.
