WALTHAM, Mass. – Suffolk baseball fell to Lasell, 8-6, in game two of a non-conference doubleheader Sunday at Stein Diamond.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 6 | Lasell 8
RECORDS: Suffolk (8-26) | Lasell (19-18)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Suffolk used three hits and one walk to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Jack Mihalchik led off the game with a double to center. He stole second before Cole Hilliard walked to put runners in the corners for Sam Armbruster, who opened the scoring with one-run single to left field. Luke Thornton followed suit with a base hit to left that scored Hilliard for the two-run margin.
- Five hits resulted in four Laser runs in the home half of the second that flipped the script in Lasell's favor, 4-2.
- The Rams stranded one runner in multiple innings but were unable to capitalize.
- With the combination of little Suffolk scoring offense and Calvin Sanft's two-run double in the bottom of the sixth, the Rams trailed 6-2 in the top of the seventh.
- Suffolk managed to chip away at that deficit in the seventh. An Armbruster sac fly was responsible for the first RBI, while Thornton collected another with a single through the right side to pull the blue-and-gold back within two, 6-4.
- After holding the Lasers in the home half of the inning, Suffolk filled the bags in the top of the eighth. Colin Flynn grounded into a double play, however, to keep the two-run gap intact.
- Lasell managed to add insurance in the home half of the eighth in the form of two runs to restore the four-run margin, 8-4.
- Another blue-and-gold comeback came in the top of the ninth. Hilliard singled and two batters later Thornton wore a pitch to put two ducks in the pond. Singles by Sebastian Lampert and Mike Mullaney plated the runners and once again the Rams faced a two-run hole. The next two batters went down in order though, to seal the setback.
