Men’s Soccer Slips to Brandeis in Home Opener, 2-1

EAST BOSTON – Suffolk men's soccer fell in a 2-0 hole it could not climb out of to fall to Brandeis, 2-1, in the Rams home debut Sunday afternoon at James A. Sartori Stadium at East Boston Memorial Park.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 1 | Brandeis 2
RECORDS: Suffolk (0-1-0) | Brandeis (2-0-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first frame, Brandeis broke onto the scoreboard three minutes into the second stanza. Suffolk's defense had the rock in front of its own net and attempted to clear it out. Elan Romo intercepted the ball and lofted a high kick towards the net that went right over Ian Caldwell's glove into the back of the net.

Ten minutes later the Judges' padded the margin to a pair. Maddox Yu slipped a pass to Nico Berninda, who sent a cross to the opposite side of the cage that tucked right under the cross bar to put the Rams in a 2-0 hole at the 57:12 mark.

Suffolk got on the board with 13:27 left in regulation. The Rams zig-zagged passed up the field to Christian Gardner on the left-hand 20-yard line that dished ahead to Zach Vlachos, who sniped a shot past Tyler Correnti to cut the margin in half.

The blue-and-gold had a chance to level the playing field five minutes later when Matthew Belluardo headed a ball towards the net. Correnti managed to turn aside the attempt to keep the lead in Brandeis' favor.
