BRIGHTON, Mass. – Suffolk softball was tripped up by Simmons, 5-1, in the opener of a double feature Friday afternoon at Daly Field.  

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A two-out dropped fly ball in center cost Suffolk three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Rams managed to make up one in the top of the fifth when Dana Still doubled down the left field line to plate Roma Braid, who singled and found herself in scoring position on an error by the Sharks' centerfielder. 
  • An inning later, Simmons padded its advantage behind a two-run double by Emma Soules that put the blue-and-gold in a 5-1 hole. 
  • Braid managed to barrel a two-out double to in the seventh, but she was stranded there as Still rolled into a ground out to third to end the inning and game. 

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Cynthia Rucinski took the loss as she allowed five runs, two earned, on seven hits and three walks with six strikeouts. 
  • Piper Kinney earned the decision behind a one-unearned run, four-hit, one-strikeout, complete-game performance. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Braid logged a 2-for-3 effort to be responsible for half of Suffolk's four hits. She had one double and one run scored. 
  • Still supplied one hit and one RBI. 
  • Ava Lanza logged one hit. 
  • Catherine Carignan added on sac.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Rucinski recorded her 200th strikeout in the setback. She is the first Rams' twirler to fan 200 hitters since Taylor Holmes achieved the feat in 2018. 
  • Braid tied a career-high two hits. She has had back-to-back games with two hits.
