Lasell Ends Women’s Basketball Win Streak, 77-65

BOSTON – Suffolk women's basketball saw its season-opening win streak come to an end Tuesday night as Lasell handed the Rams their first loss of the season, 77-65, at Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • From a 5-4 game, Lasell went on a 19-2 quarter-ending run to put Suffolk in a 24-8 hole after the first 10 minutes. 
  • That gap grew to as many as 20, 35-15, at the midway point of the second stanza. 
  • It was the Rams turn to rally and that they did as they poured in 11 answered to close the margin to nine, 35-26, with 3:43 to go before half. 
  • The blue-and-gold kept its foot on the gas and sliced the deficit down to seven, 42-35, as the teams headed to the locker room. 
  • Hoop-for-hoop action consumed the first five minutes of the third quarter before Suffolk started heating up from downtown. Back-to-back triples from Olivia Verdile and Jordan Moreau ignited an 8-0 Rams' run that was capped off by a Tatiana Tune layup that pushed the ahead, 49-48, at the 3:12 mark of the third. 
  • The blue-and-gold cooled off for the last three minutes of the third which allowed the Lasers to rebuild a 55-49 lead. 
  • Sparks of a Suffolk comeback were sporadic in the fourth frame and the closest the Rams got was 10 points, 73-63, with 2:11 remaining in regulation.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Moreau paced Suffolk's scoring with 16 points. The junior guard added two rebounds and two helpers. 
  • Allison Bono registered provided 14 caroms, eight points, two helpers and two steals. 
  • Verdile contributed 10 points, four boards and four dimes. 
  • Khaya Skene and Akiyah Brown added seven points and four rebounds apiece off the bench. The former shot 3-for-3 from the floor, that included a 1-for-1 effort from 3-point range.
  • Suffolk scored four points in transition. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Bono grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds. 
  • Skene registered a career-high in points (7), field goals made (3) and rebounds (4) and matched a personal-best in triples made (1). 
  • Ella Nixon pulled down the first rebounds of her collegiate career and finished with two to go along with one helper, which matched a career-high.

Suffolk takes a break for the Thanksgiving holiday and will turn its attention to its Conference of New England (CNE) calendar, which opens Tuesday, Dec. 2 at Wentworth at 5:00 p.m.
