Women’s Ice Hockey Closes Non-Conference at No. 15 Plattsburgh State

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Suffolk women's ice hockey closed the book on its non-conference slate with the closer of two-game series at No. 15 Plattsburgh State Saturday afternoon at Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. The Rams slipped to the nationally ranked Cardinals, 8-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Suffolk put away the first goal of the day when Katie Newkirk converted a Laurel Potter pass that made it 1-0 Rams 5:28 into the action. 
  • The Cardinals flew ahead comfortable as they poured in five unanswered to send the Rams into the first break down, 5-1.
  • The teams traded two goals apiece in the middle stanza to make it 7-3 in Plattsburgh's favor. Suffolk's strike came from Bella Schmidt at the 7:05 mark with Ava Buckley's marker following 4:45 later. 
  • Piper Smith lit the lamp 2:22 into the final period for the 8-3 final. 

NETMINDER NOTES

  • Katelyn Michals logged 50 stops in the setback. 
  • Chloe Lewis produced eight saves. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Buckley, Newkirk and Schmidt were Suffolk's scorers with one goal each. 
  • Julia HolmesLily Abraham, and Potter produced one assist apiece. 
  • Plattsburgh State handily won the shot battle, 58-11, as well as face-offs, 39-27.

  • The three goals scored are the most by Suffolk in an outing in the all-time series with Plattsburgh State.

Suffolk turns its attention back to its Conference of New England (CNE) calendar, which picks up next weekend, Jan. 23-24, with a home-and-home against Johnson & Wales. The Rams will welcome the Wildcats to Eastie Friday at 6:00 p.m., before traveling to JWU Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. puck drop.
