JWU Ends Women’s Lacrosse’s Season in CNE First Round, 19-12

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Suffolk women's lacrosse team saw its season varsity season come to a close Saturday morning as the sixth-seeded Rams fell to third-seed Johnson & Wales, 19-12, in the First Round of the Conference of New England (CNE) Tournament at Scots Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It was all Johnson & Wales in the first frame as the Wildcats put away the Rams in a 3-0 hole after 15 minutes.
  • Suffolk made things interesting as opened the second stanza with three consecutive goals of its own in the first five minutes. Carley EhwaPenelope Lawler and Julia Dickinson were responsible for the Rams' strikes with the last two off free position conversions. 
  • The exchange of three runs continued as the Wildcats responded with another 3-0 rally to restore the three-goal gap. Bridget O'Leary found the back of the cage with 47 seconds to go before halftime to trim the deficit down to 6-4 as the teams headed to the locker room. 
  • The Rams sandwiched goals around a Wildcats' strike to stay within one, 7-6. From there, JWU rattled off a 3-0 run once again to push the margin to four, 10-6.        
  • Zoe Peckham and Lauren Woods registered one goal apiece to slice the distance back to two, but JWU's Riley Shepley turned a free position attempt into a goal to make it an 11-8 Wildcats with three quarters in the books. 
  • After the teams swapped goals in the opening four minutes of the fourth quarter, JWU outscored Suffolk 7-3 the rest of the way to close out the contest.  

GOALIE GLANCE

  • Charlotte Guziejka logged 10 saves in the setback.
  • Carley Cook racked up 13 stops in the Wildcats' win.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Jessie Le lead Suffolk's attack with a four-point effort evenly divided between goals (2) and assists (2). 
  • Dickinson recorded a hat trick with three goals. The sophomore supplied five ground balls as well. 
  • Peckham provided two goals and one draw control. 
  • O'Leary finished with two goals, four ground balls, four draw controls and two caused turnovers. 
  • Lawlor logged one goal, seven draw controls, two ground balls and one caused turnover.
  • Woods added one goal, three caused turnovers, two draw controls and two ground balls.
  • Ehwa rounded out the Rams with a point with one goal to go along with one caused turnover and ground ball, respectively. 
  • Kate Carlson chipped in six draw controls, and one caused turnover. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk competed in the CNE postseason for the first time in program history. 
  • The Rams played at JWU for the first time. 
  • Dickinson had her eighth hat trick of the season. 
  • Peckham produced a point in every game this season, scoring in all, but one contest. 
  • O'Leary also has registered at least one point in every game she appeared this year. 
  • Lawlor had her second goal of the season. 
  • Ehwa pushed her point streak to five games. In that span she has 14 goals and 16 assists.
