WNE Gets by Women’s Soccer, 3-2

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Suffolk women's soccer fell behind early Saturday afternoon, attempted to comeback, but came up short as Western New England edged the Rams, 3-2, in Conference of New England play at Supreneant Field.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 2 | Western New England 3
RECORDS: Suffolk (8-3-5, 5-3-3 CNE) | Western New England (7-6-4, 4-4-1 CNE)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Western New England potted a pair of goals over a 2:18 span late in the first half to put the Rams in a 2-0 hole.
  • The first Golden Bears strike came off the boot of Julia Dufresne with help by Meghan Hartneett at the 35:07 minute mark.
  • Ava Santos converted a PK in the 38th minute to round out the scoring in the first set of 45 minutes.
  • Danielle Petronio put the Rams on the board 6:17 into the second stanza. The senior was persistent as her first shot was blocked by the Golden Bears defense. The Rams regained possession and Sophia Vazquez slipped a pass to Petronio who took one dribble before she lofted a ball from outside the box that sailed towards the cage. Ainsley Napolitino jumped with her gloves stretched out but was unable to stop the ball from hitting the back of the net to make it 2-1 with plenty of time on the clock.
  • WNE restored its two-goal edge just over five minutes later when Liza Pinetta connected low right.
  • The margin did not last long. From the reset at the midfield a long ball played into Golden Bears territory found Lily Goldmann, who dribbled through a wall of defenders and finished low right to cut the deficit back to one, 3-2, with 33:55 remaining in regulation.
  • Suffolk would not take its foot off the gas pedal to even matters once again. The Rams first eight attempts were off target, but their ninth, which came with 37 seconds left to play, went towards the net. Napolitano was there to deny the shot off Goldmann's cleat though to keep the 3-2 decision in WNE's favor.

KEEPING UP WITH THE KEEPERS

  • Arden Rose registered the loss with a two-save effort.
  • Napolitano secured the win with a two-stop performance.
