Women’s Volleyball Snaps Skid at Hartford, 3-1

HARTFORD, Conn. – Suffolk women's volleyball returned to the win column with a 3-1 Conference of New England (CNE) triumph over Hartford Saturday at Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavilion.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Suffolk opened the match with a 6-2 span and stayed in front at the midway point, 13-6. That seven-point margin remained, 19-12 before five unanswered Hawks points the Hawks trimmed blue-and-gold's cushion to three, 20-17. See-saw action consumed the next few points to keep things close at 24-22 in Suffolk's favor. Scott Blanchard took a timeout to talk things over and from the huddle an attack error by Hartford's Lauren Johnson gave the frame to the Rams, 25-22. 
  • Back-and-forth action saw Suffolk with a 5-4 edge the ballooned to an 11-5 advantage. The Hawks answered with a 6-1 run to restore the one-point gap, 12-11. The teams continued to traded points, which saw the stanza even at 15-all. The Rams regained the upperhand as they rattled off six straight go ahead 22-15. The teams went point-for-point the rest of the set, which allowed Suffolk to take it 25-18. 
  • Hartford managed to start ahead in the third, 7-3. A 9-1 Rams run flipped the script in their favor, 12-8. The outings of rallies continued with the as the Hawks came back to lock things at 14. Out of a 15-all, the Hawks suck in front by two and did not let Suffolk get any closer to rest of the way to force a fourth, 25-22.  
  • Suffolk trailed the entire fourth and remained down four at 23-19. Resilience paid off for Suffolk as a Thomander kills as followed by a Hawks' attack error and a Kathy Mo ace to make it a one-point gap. After a bad set from Aislinn Lanigan that turned on set point for Hartford, the blue-and-gold compiled four consecutive points, three on Hawks' errors to take the set, 26-24, and match. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Nogrove notched 11 kills, three aces and two digs. 
  • Grace Cervenka registered 10 kills, three digs, two aces and two blocks. 
  • Thomander tallied nine kills with one block. 
  • Lanigan set up the Rams' 40-kill attack with 34 assists to go along with seven digs, one kill and one block. 
  • Chloe Clement had an all-around effort of 13 digs, three kills, three aces and one handout. 
  • Mo headlined the back row with 19 digs, two helpers and a clutch ace in the fourth set. 
  • Mackenzie Heaney added 18 digs, two kill and one ace.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk defeated Hartford for the first time in program history. 
  • The Rams are now 1-2 all-time against the Hawks. 
  • Suffolk is now 1-1 on the road versus Hartford. 
  • Today's decision was the first four-set outcome between Suffolk and Hartford.
