Men’s Ice Hockey Falls to Colby, 4-3

EAST BOSTON – Suffolk men's ice hockey, who is receiving votes in the latest USCHO.com Poll, fell to Colby, 4-3, on Tuesday evening at Louis E. Porrazzo Memorial Skating Rink. 

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Suffolk needed just 14 seconds to strike first. Nolan Leonard won the opening draw, sprung Jake Gracefor a chance, and after the initial shot was stopped, Marko Giourof buried the rebound for the early 1-0 edge.
  • Colby answered with a surge, netting three goals in a 5:47 span from Colby Browne, Tyler Crist, and a power-play tally by Massimo Gentile.
  • Suffolk punched back two minutes later at the 16:35 mark as Cole Scott won a battle behind the net and fed Dimitri Voyatzis, who redirected the puck to Ralph Barry for a finish from the crease.
  • Just 27 seconds after that, Giourof picked off a puck deep in the Colby zone and lifted the puck over the goalie's pad to level the game 3-3 heading into the first intermission.
  • Browne delivered the lone goal of the second for Colby with just over five minutes remaining.
  • The third went scoreless. Suffolk generated late pressure with a 6-on-4 advantage thanks to an empty net and a power play, but couldn't find an equalizer as the Mules closed out the 4-3 decision. 

NETMINDER NOTES

  • Austin McNicholas made nine saves in the contest.
  • Adam Costley stopped 17 shots in the win.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Giourof scored twice and Berry added one goal.
  • Leonard, Grace, Scott, and Voyatzis each recorded one assist.
  • Suffolk outshot the Mules 20-13.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk hosted Colby for the first time in program history. 
  • Giourof tied a career-high in goals (2) and points (2). 
  • Berry notched his second goal of the season.
  • Leonard pushed his point streak to four straight games, handing out five helpers in that span to bring his season total to nine (3g, 6a).
  • Voyatzis extended his point streak to four straight with two goals and three assists over that stretch.
  • Grace registered his third assist of the season.
  • Scott recorded his third assist of the year and seventh point.

Suffolk gets an extended break before returning to conference play on Saturday, Dec. 6 with a 4:50 p.m. puck drop versus Conference of New England (CNE) counterpart Johnson & Wales in Eastie, which concludes first semester play for the Rams.
