Women’s Ice Hockey Forces Draw at Curry, 2-2, Takes Shootout

CANTON, Mass. – Suffolk women's ice hockey and Curry played to a 2-2 Conference of New England (CNE) stalemate Saturday afternoon at the Canton Ice house. Down one in the third period, Alexia Hill poured in the game-tying goal on the power play to anchor the Rams comeback. 

Following a scoreless overtime, the blue-and-gold garnered a league-standing tie breaker edge behind a 3-2 shootout win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Suffolk wasted no time to get on the board as Laurel Potter potted the game-opening goal 30 seconds into the action. Katie Newkirk and Abby Sandler aided on the first goal of the night. 
  • A power play marker from Curry's Darby Marshall leveled the game at 1-all at the 14:08 mark of the first, which remained at the first intermission. 
  • The score stood still until the final 40 seconds of the middle period when Morgan Slough pushed the Colonels in front, 2-1. Rian Faery and Aria Kader assisted on the goal.
  • The Rams used a power play puck of their own to even things at 2-all with 4:58 left in the third period. Hill was responsible for the game-tying goal that was set-up by Bella Schmidt
  • Neither team managed to poke another one through in regulation to force an extra session. 
  • Curry commanded the pace of play in the extra session, but thankfully for Suffolk Katelyn Michals did not let a puck past her. 
  • The Rams had a chance as they went on a power play with 1:22 left in the OT, but Coriann Hoag denied the lone attempt the blue-and-gold put on target to keep things 2-2 at the final whistle. 

NETMINDER NOTES

  • Michals made 43 saves in the draw. 
  • Hoag had 34 stops to her favor.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Hill and Potter were responsible for Suffolk's scores with one goal apiece. 
  • Newkirk, Sandler and Schmidt logged on assist each. 
  • Curry commanded shots, 45-36. 
  • Both teams had 10 blocks. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk is now 9-4-2 all-time against Curry. 
  • The Rams moved to 5-1-1 on the road versus the Colonels. 
  • Suffolk and Curry went into overtime for the second time, first since Feb. 16, 2024. 
  • Both overtime outings between Suffolk and Curry have ended in 2-2 stalemates. 
  • Under Abby Ostrom's guidance, Suffolk sport a 3-3-2 mark versus Curry. 
  • Hill and Potter have both scored one goal in each of Suffolk's two games this season.
  • Newkirk, Sandler and Schmidt recorded their first points on the year with one helper each.
